Late Entry #3 - Work

October 18, 2007
Filed under: Baby Dunbar, Blog — Kerry @ 9:26 pm

I entered a totally new world last month as I went back to work.  I had some part-time days before I resumed my clinical duties.  So I’m back to patients, research, and procedures.  I’ve had to develop even more organization skills than before or I’m late, late, late to work.  Everything must be laid out the night before (clothes, breakfast, lunch, work bag packed) and the shower must be taken at night as the morning is too unpredictable.  Will Owen wake up in time to eat and still leave me time to pump before I go?  Will he wake up and want to be held for a whole hour without being set down?  These are the great mysteries of the morning.  Yes, I am actually writing about being late for work and calling it a ‘mystery’.

Late Entry #2 - Travel to Arizona

Filed under: Baby Dunbar, Blog — Kerry @ 9:24 pm

Owen took his first airplane ride in September when we went to my grandmother’s funeral in
Arizona.  I’m sad that she’s gone, but glad that she was surrounded by her kids when she passed at hospice.  She was a neat lady and sharp (and very stubborn) until the end.

Owen has proved to be a good traveler, sleeping on the airplane and not minding the 3 hour time change.  In addition to his first airplane flight, it was also his first trip to the desert.  It was also his first time to get checked out by a ferret,  owned by our friends Angus, Julie, Haley, and AJ, who let us stay with them and let my family congregate at their house.  The desert was really pretty and flowers were blooming as it was the ‘monsoon’ season. This means that it rains some, but isn’t like the photos of monsoons in Asia, where people are wading waist deep in water.

It’s been awhile - or “Late Entry #1

Travis and I celebrated our 8 year wedding anniversary September 11th.  We were actually dating and then engaged for the 5 years previous to that, so I guess you could say we’ve known each other a long time.  One of the first places we sent together was Target.  I needed a pillow and Travis needed a colander, which took a long time to pick out.  Things progressed nicely from there.

It’s been a loooong time since I posted so get ready for a flurry of blog posts….

Babies, Babies Everywhere

Filed under: Baby Kenton, Blog — emkenton @ 7:58 am

It is funny how I spent 5+ years of marriage absolutely unable to consider the prospect of children without at least a minor freakout and then, when it finally seemed doable, found so many other people ready to have kids, too.   My cousin and his wife introduced Kinsley Meredith yesterday and the day before that, Addison Grace arrived thanks to one of the daughters of my dad’s lifelong best friend.  Another of the daughters is set to give birth any day now, too!  And I also met the newest baby Owen, 2-week old son of my dear grad-school friend Katie, yesterday.  So many babies!

Many of you may know that my favorite kind of story (literary or cinematic) is a coming-of-age one.  I’m always the one fascinated with the idea of what we’re all going to be like when we’re older and who will still be friends with whom, etc.  So of course, I’m wondering which of these babies will become Baboo’s friends!!  Which then leads me to all kinds of worries about how we’re going to make sure that Baboo is kind, gentle, witty, intelligent…..and the list goes on!!  :-)  Okay, enough worries for the day.

Not much else going on here.  Seth doesn’t have school tomorrow because it’s the state teachers’ convention (which no one goes to but they get the day off for it) so he’s looking forward to that.  They will still have football practice and games this weekend, though.  This game against Quince Orchard should be the first really big challenge for the Varsity Stormin’ Warriors who are currently 6-0, and I know it’ll be a tough one for Seth’s team to win, as well.  Should be interesting!

“Baboo Made Me Eat It”

October 16, 2007

That’s going to be my mantra for the next 11-ish weeks.  I experienced what I think was my first preggers eating binge Sunday night and I’m only partially ashamed.  While I’ve definitely been more liberal with my dessert eating when offered a tasty treat, it wasn’t until the late hours at the Red Roof Inn in Westbury, NY that I really let loose.  I flew into Islip on Southwest (okay, FIL, it wasn’t that bad), rented a car (got an upgrade to that crazy looking Dodge Magnum– turns out you can see out that tiny back window), and drove about 35 minutes west towards NYC and the aforementioned swanky hotel.  Checked in after 8 pm and just didn’t feel like going out in search of grub.  The guy at the counter gave me a selection of menus for places that delivered and off I went to choose my dinner.

One of them was a service that delivers food from many different restaurants and I immediately saw that California Pizza Kitchen was an option.  We don’t make it to CPK very often because there isn’t one very close to us, so I opted to go back to basics with their Barbecue Chicken Pizza.  Then when I was on the phone with the delivery service, I figured why not ask about dessert options?  Yes indeed, please throw that chocolate souffle cake in there as well.   Now, I’ve ordered CPK pizzas plenty of time and I rarely eat more than 3 of the pieces.  Maybe 4 if I’m feeling crazy.   On this particular night, however, Baboo had been letting me know that I hadn’t been eating enough of late and I needed to go nuts.  So that I did.  I finally hid the box after eating the crust off the 6th and final piece and leaving only the pile of cheese and chicken from that last wedge.  And then it was time for the cake.  Mmmm…..cake!

The good news is that my doctor’s appointment isn’t until next week so I can be better about my eating and walking this week before stepping onto the scale of terror!  Of course, I can’t get around as quickly as I used to.  I might be losing this battle.  If the next picture you see of me is unrecognizable for all my rolls, it’s okay to be honest.  Just remember– Baboo made me eat it!

I know, I know– this has nothing to do with Baboo.  But here are just a few pics of what we did with our raw ingredients:

I’ll take my father to the airport this afternoon and hop on a plane myself.  I’m going on a quick overnight trip to Long Island to do a training in the morning and then be back tomorrow afternoon.   I’m thinking this is the end of my flying days for awhile…

We found plenty of things to pick at Larriland Farm yesterday!  The proof:

We picked 7 varieties of apples (about 65 lbs), broccoli, and spinach as pictured above.  We also started the day picking tomatoes (since it still hasn’t frozen here) and fresh basil so you KNOW there’s a killer Caprese salad in our future!  Here’s our loot once we got home:

We went to the Sherwood Varsity Homecoming game last night and were happy to see the Stormin’ Warriors win 35-0 even though the first half was a little rough.  The real football fun, however, was this morning at the JV game.  Seth had quite the cheering section in the stands, although the loudest cheers from our area were definitely for the Chain Crew when they finally got to go out and measure a close call.  Thanks to all our Glen Mar UMC friends (or “Glen Martians” as apparently members of our church are known to be called) for coming to the game!   3-month old Owen wins the prize for the youngest fan ever, and he was super cute in his Sherwood-colored fleece combo outfit!   After the game, we all went to the Olney Ale House for a tasty lunch.  Ah, the wonder of the perfect October football game!   Oh yes– we won 30-0!!

The fabulous chain gang in action plus the fans in the stands:

My dad arrived yesterday and we’re getting ready to head out to the farm to pick some apples.  I called yesterday and they claim to have 8 different varieties to pick, so we’re excited!!   Sherwood football games tonight and tomorrow morning to follow (complete with some friends working the chain crew at Seth’s game in the morning!) and then some apple-treat making kitchen adventures.  Pictures and excitement sure to come!

PS– You still have time to enter the BabooBirth poll!!  (hint, hint!!!)

The tile is now complete (well, the grout is still setting, but there is no work remaining on the tile). So, now we just have a few loose ends left until we’re done.
